Visiting the OBX? Here's what you need to know.
You're on vacation. You want to relax, not research hemp law. This page gives you the minimum viable knowledge to walk into an OBX hemp shop, buy the right thing, and not get in trouble on the way home.
The three things that matter
- You must be 21+. Every shop ID-checks. Bring your driver's license or passport. No exceptions.
- NC is hemp-only. No recreational marijuana. Everything sold is hemp-derived (under 0.3% Δ9 THC by weight) or in the THCA grey area.
- Don't cross state lines with THCA. It's federally illegal at airports and borders. CBD and Δ9 edibles are generally fine.
What to buy if you're just visiting
If you want to relax without overthinking it: a pack of 5–10mg Δ9 gummies and a CBD topical for sunburn. That's 90% of what tourists need, and every OBX shop carries both.

Can I fly home with it?
CBD gummies/tinctures: Yes, generally. Pack in carry-on, keep the label on.
Δ9 gummies: Technically legal under 0.3% but TSA has discretion. Pack small amounts, original packaging. Don't volunteer information. If asked, say "hemp-derived CBD gummies."
THCA flower, vapes, or concentrates: No.Do not fly with these. Do not drive them across state lines. Federal law applies at airports and borders regardless of state law.
