The 4x4 North: Pure Isolation
If you have a capable vehicle, the Corolla 4x4 beach is the ultimate sanctuary. Once you pass the paved roads, the density of people drops significantly.
Pro Tip: Drive as far north as your permits and tires allow. The areas closest to the Currituck Sound offer a unique, dual-waterfront vibe that is far quieter than the Atlantic-facing hotspots.
Sound-Side Sanctuaries
While most tourists flock to the ocean, the sound side of the islands (especially around Manteo and the northern parts of Hatteras) offers incredible vistas and much more privacy.
Public boat ramps and small fishing piers on the sound side often have pockets of shoreline that are virtually empty during the week.
