The Salvo cannabis scene

Salvo is the southernmost of the three Tri-Villages on south Hatteras Island (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo). It's the quietest of the three — a thin strip of Highway 12, sound-side neighborhoods, and some of the best kiteboarding on the East Coast. Population: a few hundred year-round, swelling to a few thousand in peak summer.

The cannabis market is the smallest of any OBX town we cover: zero shops. The two closest options are both 5 minutes away (Waves to the north, Rodanthe further north). For a wider selection, Buxton (25 min north) and Avon (20 min north) are the next stops. For full selection, KDH (80 min north) is the regional capital.

The good news: delivery works. Several OBX delivery services reach Salvo with no extra fee. Order before 4pm and you'll usually have product in hand by 6-7pm. See our delivery guide for the full list.

Buying strategy

For visitors to Salvo:

  1. Stock up before you arrive. If you're driving down from KDH or coming in from out of state, hit a KDH or Buxton shop before crossing into the Tri-Villages. The selection is much wider and the prices are lower.
  2. Use delivery. Multiple OBX delivery services reach Salvo. For a mid-week top-off, this is often easier than driving 25-80 minutes each way.
  3. Know the closest in-person options. Waves Hemp Outpost (5 min north) and Rodanthe Hemp Co. (5 min north, other direction) are both solid for re-supply. Buxton (25 min) and Avon (20 min) have wider selection.
  4. Cash backup. Delivery drivers sometimes can't run cards in this part of the island. Have cash ready, even if you usually pay digitally.

Top picks at a glance

  • Closest shop (5 min north)

Waves Hemp Outpost is the nearest option — 5 minutes north on Highway 12. Curated, small, but solid. See our full Waves guide.

  • Closest shop (5 min north alternative)

Rodanthe Hemp Co. is 5 minutes north via Highway 12 in the other direction. Slightly larger inventory, similar vibe. See our full Rodanthe guide.

  • Best for stocking up the rental

Stock up in KDH (80 min north) before driving down. Salvo is a quiet place to unplug, not a place to source a week of variety.

Shop reviews

Salvo has no in-town shops as of mid-2026. The closest options are listed in our Waves guideand Rodanthe guide. For a wider selection within a 30-minute drive, see ourBuxton guide andAvon guide. For full selection, the Kill Devil Hills guidecovers the regional capital (80 min north).

We visit every shop we list. We pay for our own products. We don’t take payment for placement. Ratings reflect selection, staff knowledge, atmosphere, value, and consistency. Check our news page for updates on whether a Salvo shop has opened.

Salvo is the last quiet place on the OBX. We don't have a shop, and honestly, that's part of the appeal. You come here to unplug, not to shop.

Red flags in Salvo area shops

The Tri-Villages are small enough that bad shops get talked about fast. If you're driving to Waves or Rodanthe and something feels off (no COAs, no rotation, a budtender who can't name the growers), the 20-30 minute drive to Buxton or Avon gives you better alternatives. Watch for the standard hemp-shop red flags: untested product, no COA on file, or pricing wildly above the KDH market.

The bottom line

Salvo is the smallest market on the Outer Banks for cannabis shopping. Zero in-town shops, with the nearest options 5-80 minutes away depending on what you need. The play: stock up before you arrive, use delivery for re-supply, and use the 5-minute drive to Waves or Rodanthe for the basics. Salvo is a kiteboarding and sound-side paddling town, not a shopping destination — embrace that and you'll have a great week.
